Where is Abaco?
We stayed on the island of Great Abaco, which is on the north end of the Bahamas.
This is a 45 minute flight from Miami, Florida. If you are coming from the West Coast, it will probably take about 3 flights to get here.
Where should I stay?
We have a membership with Exclusive Resorts, so we stayed at a house owned by them. The home had 4 bedrooms and was very close to the beach. We had to walk about 2 minutes to a private beach area.
I recommend trying to find a way to stay in a home here, but there are other great options!
There are lots of cute cottages that sleep 3-4 people on Airbnb and VRBO.
The Delphi Club also looks like a nice option! We didn’t stay here, but the hotel looks very nice and is a great option if you want fishing access.
Why go to Acabo?
The island is pretty small, which makes the trip very relaxing. This was a pro for us!
This is the perfect island to sit back, relax, and enjoy beach time. We had lots of time to read and talk with our friends.
The sand is absolutely gorgeous! It is so soft and the beaches are very nice.
We booked a catamaran through Cruise Abaco and it was fantastic!
The tour started at 10 am and returned at 4:30 in the evening.
We were able to sail to another town, visit a lighthouse, stop for lunch, snorkel over a beautiful reef with colorful fish!
We loved slow mornings here. We slept in every day, went to the gym, made breakfast with groceries, and then spent the day at the beach.
I will say, we still prefer Hawaii for a beach destination. However, this is still an awesome destination especially for East-coasters!
Where should I eat?
We ate at some amazing restaurants at the Abaco Club, but unfortunately these are only available to guests.
All of the restaurants recommend Conch! This is an Abaco specialty. It had a texture similar to calamari.
Pete’s Pub - Super casual! Beachfront and indoor picnic table seating! Amazing fresh fish.
Wally’s - Similar to Pete’s but slightly less casual. Great patio seating! The key lime pie was a highlight!
Delphi House - Anyone can eat here even if you aren’t a guest. This is a unique communal dining experience! There were about 15 people at a long table that we sat at.You get to choose from a variety of main dishes (fantastic fish and lobster) and it’s served with the most amazing homemade bread!
Logistics
We did not rent a car. We had the Abaco Club set up drivers for us to take us to different destinations.
However, we would rent a car next time we go! The drivers got a bit expensive. The island seems very navigable with a GPS.
We stayed at the house for 5 nights. This felt like the perfect amount! We never got bored and it was so nice to relax and have fun with our friends. I would say to stay here at least 3 nights.
We visited mid-January and it was colder than I expected. It was mid 60s (F) and windy, which felt a bit chilly for the beach. But it wasn’t bad! It was much better than most places in the winter.
Locals told us that June-September can be really hot and humid, and that it isn’t very comfortable.
The best times to visit Acabo are Mid-March to Mid-May and October-November. However, October can sometimes be hurricane season.
