Why Take a One on One Trip
Getting away with just one child can feel like a luxury and it can be a great way to bond. When it’s just the two of you, your child will have more say in what he/she gets to do on the vacation. They can help with the planning, go to a place they really want to see, and get focused time with a parent. There will be less stress since when things don’t go right with just two people, it’s not that big of a deal. Without siblings around, there will not be fighting with each other or fights for mom or dad’s attention.
There are just so many great reasons to get away with just one child.
Eric takes each of his three children on a one on one trip each year and says he will do it as long as they are interested. He found that age 3 or 4 is a great time to start this tradition. But if you have older kids, don’t think that you’ve missed a window of opportunity! Just start now.
Planning the Trips
Let the kids direct where they would like to go. If you have budget constraints, let them know upfront. Let them know if they can choose an international destination or if they need to keep it closer to home.
Once the destination is selected, have the kids research the activities they want to do there. Of course, a 3-year-old won’t be able to do a lot of research on their own, but you can show options and let them choose favorites.
Great Destination Options
Of course, you need to consider the interests of your child when picking a destination. Eric said that Australia is a great place to start because they speak English which adds some familiarity but there are different animals, different phrases, unique sites, and the food is a bit different but not very unfamiliar.
He said that Antarctica is great for ages 8+. You just book passage on a boat touring Antarctica and then let the tour company do all of the planning for you.
Another great option is the Faroe Islands. It’s remote, quiet, and has loads of outdoor activities.
