Packing Tips - Before You Go

When you will be on the road and stopping for just one night per hotel, put all of the clothes for your entire family in one grocery bag. Have one toiletry bag for the whole family. That bag can then be filled with dirty laundry in the morning.

Plan out snacks. Each person gets one big baggie filled with their allotted snacks for the day. The kids can learn to make it last all day Or they may decide to eat everything in the first hour. Giving one snack bag per day helps the snacks last the duration of the trip.

Hit up the dollar section at Target or the Dollar Store and pick up little games, coloring books, dolls, activities throughout the year. Save these items for your next road trip.

Collect your junkier toys from McDonald’s or other places throughout the year and store them in a bucket. Bring the bucket along with all of the free toys you’ve collected.

Wrap the toys/games in wrapping paper and let the kids open something new each hour.

Download movies to devices before you leave and be sure to bring charging cords.

Set up clear expectations for screen time before you leave on the trip.

While on the Road Trip

Allow for fun along the way.

Plan extra travel time so that you can stop when you see something interesting along the way.

Use points to book hotels if you have them to allow for more flexibility.

Look at routes and see what hotels will be along your route. Consider different cities because some will have lower hotel rates.

Plan out where you want to stop for food. If you like place places, Google it to see what is ahead so you don’t drive past places that will work best.

Consider packing a picnic or getting food from a drive -thru and then taking the food to eat at a park so that the kids can stretch their legs.
