How to Experience the Magic of Romania on an Enchanting Family Adventure
This week we are joined by Casiana Pascariu to talk about visiting the magical country of Romania! This country is underrated and overlooked, so you won’t want to miss learning more about why you need to plan a visit!
Here is all the basic information you’ll need to get started planning your family vacation to Romania!
Where should I fly into?
Depending on where you’re leaving from, you’ll have different flight options. If you are living in the United States, Casiana recommends flying to Western Europe first and then getting a connecting flight. There aren’t typically direct flights straight into Romania.
Casiana recommends flying into the Cluj-Napoca airport. This is in Transylvania!
How much time should I spend there and where should I go?
Spend at least 2-3 days Cluj after arriving.
Then take a train to Baia-Mare, county Maramures. This city is like taking a step back in time!
If you have time, head south to see Brasov, Sighișoara, Iasi, and Unesco Monasteries in Moldova (a region in Romania).
In order to see all of this, Casiana recommends 2 weeks in order to enjoy it all.
How should I get around?
Take the train! It’s affordable, easy to use, and lets you see amazing views!
Buses are also an option. However, not many people speak English so it can be trickier to navigate.
Driving is an additional option if you feel comfortable navigating a vehicle.
What are the best activities to do in Romania?
There is something for everyone! You can spend days in the city relaxing and eating at nice restaurants.
You can also visit villages and see how they function. Many older villages still do things “the old-fashioned” way!
If you want to really have a “rural experience”, check out Airbnb experiences to find locals that will show you around and teach you how people in the area live.
There are many art and history museums and beautiful architectural buildings to visit as well.
There are also beautiful hikes!
Can I get around if I only speak English?
In the bigger cities, the language shouldn’t be a problem.
As you go into smaller villages, it might be more difficult.
Google Translate is also a great tool to communicate!
What are the food options?
In many areas, the people eat by seasons. In other words, they eat whatever foods are in season! Check out farmers' markets if you can! Everything is so fresh.
Traditional Romanian foods include:
Polenta (Mamaliga) with fresh cheese and sour cream
Vegetable spread (Zacusca)
Pork is a big part of Romanian culture.
Goulash
Sarma (Romanian cabbage rolls)
When is the best time to visit?
Most people visit June-August during the summer.
August is especially busy and can be overcrowded.
The end of June or early July will have great weather and Romanians will still be in school, so it won’t be as busy around town.
However, if you like to ski, you can have an amazing wintertime in Romania.
There are many resort options!
Is it safe?
Yes, it is very safe!
