My family and some of our friends got to go on a cruise to the Eastern Caribbean last week for spring break! One of our stops was St. Lucia and we have the most amazing day thanks to our tour guide, Naomi. She was kind enough to join us for this week’s podcast to give us some insight into the best things to see, do, and eat on the island!
Where to stay?
There are many resorts around the island, where people like to go and stay for a week or so. Naomi says that this is a great option for some people, but it may limit the outside excursions and food that you’d want to try. This is also the more expensive option as many resorts are all-inclusive.
Naomi recommends staying at one of the villas around the island! If you contact her directly, she will be able to help you find the best deals on the island!
Staying at a villa allows for the most flexibility when it comes to adventures and trying new foods!
The money that you save from not staying at a big resort can go towards more excursions
Many people also visit this island via cruises (like we did)!
Best food in St. Lucia
The bakeries have great treats! Naomi recommends trying coconut bread and banana bread.
Naomi recommends stopping at roadside grills for great meats.
The fruit is all fresh and SO delicious!
Rum tasting is also super popular.
Naomi suggests The Beacon restaurant if you are wanting to go sit down and eat somewhere. The views are also amazing from this restaurant!
If you’re looking for food near the airport, Naomi says to check out Island Breeze or The Reef.
What to do during your stay
On the north side of the island, you’ll want to stop by the Castries Market to taste fresh fruit. The fruits at the market will vary based on what’s in season.
Connected to the Castries market are local vendors selling handmade souvenirs! Naomi points out that you want to be sure to check where the items were made, as some people will try to sell “local” items from China.
There is also a cathedral nearby that tourists like to visit.
As you head down the west coast, you should take a pit stop at Mt. Fortune. As you climb up it, you will have a great view of the Castries, and on a clear day, you can see neighboring islands.
Visit the Governor General’s house.
As you drive down the coast, you will reach Marigot Bay! You have the option of enjoying the views from above or taking a cheap water taxi to the beach where you can snorkel or relax.
Continue down the coast to visit Anse La Raye, a small picturesque fishing village.
If you like to drink rum, there are places where you can taste test many different flavors of rum!
There are multiple chocolate factories on the island that offer chocolate-making classes and tastings!
The Tet Paul Trail has amazing views of the island! Like seriously, these views are breathtaking!
Be sure to check out the mud baths!
Visit Piton Falls, which is also a mineral spring with warm water that you can get into.
Diamond waterfall & botanical garden is another great option if you want to see more beautiful outdoor sites.
Take a waterfall-chasing tour if you want to do some hiking and see the hidden waterfall gems.
If you’re interested in snorkeling, there are plenty of great spots to do this! Click here for some ideas of where to go!
On the East coast, you can visit Lastille Falls! This waterfall has a pond at the bottom with fish that will eat the dead skin off your feet.
Zipline at Treetop ziplining! There are 12 different lines that take you through the beautiful trees.
Go horseback riding along the East coast! This will allow you to see some beautiful views.
Relax on the North coast beaches.
Visit Pigeon Island and hike for some great views of the island as well as the neighboring island, Martinique.
What’s the weather like?
It’s usually warm, but the winter nights do cool down quite a bit.
The wet/hurricane season is June-November. During this time, there is less tourism.
It does rain often, but it’s usually only for small parts of the day and then it clears out.
Do I need to exchange money?
The local currency is the Eastern Caribbean Dollar, but many places prefer to take US Dollars!
However, try to only bring smaller bills, as many vendors don’t trust the bigger bills due to counterfeits.
Some places will accept pounds, but not euros.
I hope this information helps you to plan the best vacation to St. Lucia with your family!
