094 Free Travel Apps You Need for Your Next Vacation

Today I’m sharing my list of favorite travel apps that you will want to use on your next vacation. These apps will make booking accommodations, finding great flights, staying organized, and exploring better a breeze. There are so many travel apps available so let me guide you through my favorites and share why I think you need these apps to create a better travel experience for you and your family.

Accommodations

Hotel Tonight

  • Discover last-minute discounts on empty hotel rooms available that night.

  • Type in any city to search and a map pops up showing prices and locations on the top 2/3 of the screen. 

  • The bottom 1/3 shows photos of the hotel, hotel name, current price, and the original price. You can swipe through to find options that interest you.

  • Tap on a hotel and get a summary of why they like this hotel, list of amenities, and reviews.

  • You can just book for that one night plus there is an option to add a second night.

Airbnb

  • Find the Airbnb app in the App Store.

  • Messaging is convenient in the app. I like searching/booking on my computer but then use the app for maps, check-in directions, and messaging the host.

Booking.com

  • Great site with a huge selection of hotels, apartments, and vacation rentals.

Transportation

Hopper

  • Enter in departure city and destination and it will show prices for different days over the course of a few months. Look ahead to see the least expensive days to fly.

  • “Watch this trip” feature where you can save a trip and then get alerts when the price drops.

  • Price predictor lets you know if the app thinks prices will go up or down.

  • You can book flights through the app. Check the airline directly first, but hopper is oftentimes less expensive

Google Flights    

  • Easy flight search on multiple airlines.

  • It’s simple to add multi-city trips to the search.

Airline Apps

  • Download the app for the airline you will be flying on so that you can check-in and have access to your boarding pass on your phone.

  • Set up alerts to find out about flight delays and gate changes.

  • Many airlines now have you use your phone for the media options during flight. Be sure to have the media app for your airline downloaded before flying so you can enjoy movies and TV shows during the flight.

Headspace

  • The is a mediation app that would be perfect to use on a flight if you feel anxious.

  • Use this app in the hotel at night when you need to unwind after a busy travel day.

LoungeBuddy

  • Website or app options

  • Type in the airport and it will tell you all the lounge options at the airport.

  • With Lounge Buddy, you can pay a fee at some lounges without having the membership or certain ticket type.

  • Lounges often have food, showers, and comfortable places to spread out.

  • It also tells about lounges that have entry requirements.

  • Put in date/time of arrival and book your lounge reservation.

Priority Pass

  • Similar options to Lunge Buddy

Uber

  • Keeps communication clear when getting a ride and you enter your exact destination and the driver follows the map.

  • Great when the passenger and drive speak different languages since communication is done through the app.

  • Bolt and Lyft are other popular options. Different cities seem to have ta more popular option so ask around and see which ride service is preferred.

Organization

TripIt

  • Travel organizer that lets you add flights, hotels, car reservations, ferry & train tickets, and activities. 

  • Share trip plans with others

  • Great way to gather all of your trip information into once place.

Packpoint

  • Enter your destination, number of nights, and then add which activities you will be doing. (Swimming, snow sports, photography, hiking, biking, fancy dinner, etc.) to generate a packing list.

  • Option to mark if you will do laundry on the trip.

  • A list will be generated and you can swipe away any item that you don’t want on the list.

  • They are basic lists for each activity but thorough and thought out.

  • Tap the checkmark next to each item on the list once you’ve packed it.

Splitwise

  • Divide up trip costs when traveling with friends. 

  • Create a trip in the app and invite all traveler to that trip.

  • Everyone in the group can add any shared expenses.

  • At the end of the trip, the app will tell you who owes who what.

Roadtrippers

  • Driving directions from point A to point B.

  • Add hotels, things to do, food, campaign, outdoors, points of interest along your route.

  • “Add to trip” for things you want to see and do. 

  • Discover hidden gems and new restaurants along your route.

International Trips

Timeshifter

  • This app helps you avoid jet lag.

  • Gives recommendations based on age, gender, sleep patterns.

  • You will need to start following plan up to 4 days ahead of the trip.

  • 1st jet lag plan is free, second is $10. Unlimited for $25 for a year.

Rick Steves Audio Europe

  • Get walking audio tours for most of the popular sites and cities in Europe.

  • Maps are included so you can see where the tour goes.

  • Rick Steves narrates the tours and shares interesting stories and facts throughout the tour.

XE Currency

  • Excellent currency converter

Google Translate

  • Type, write or take a picture to have languages translated.

  • Two-way instant speech is available in 32 languages.
