Why You Want to Add Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe onto Your Safari Trip

In this episode I’m discussing all things related to activities, money, day trips, and more related to visiting Victoria Falls! It’s 100% worth the trip!

How to get there

  • Our tour guide arranged a charter flight from another safari camp that took us first to Nelspruit Airport, then to Victoria Falls

    • Because of this charter flight, we had to pack for the trip in soft-sided duffle bags

  • The Victoria Falls airport was a lot bigger than I expected!

  • Once you get off the plane, you will have to wait in line to buy a visa for the country

    • You need to have $30-45 cash and your passport available. They mostly use USD or British pounds.

    • It is $30 if you are only going into Zimbabwe. But it is $45 to get a double visa that also lets you into Zambia and back into Zimbabwe. Be sure to check where your excursions are and if you’ll be going in and out of the country.

    • There is an ATM machine at the airport. We went through about $250 in tips in our 3 days in Zimbabwe, and we could have used more! Make sure to bring small bills because almost nowhere had small bills to break up $20s.

Visiting Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe

  • Obviously you’ll want to visit the actual Victoria Falls while in Victoria Falls! They are magnificent.

    • We saw the falls through a private guide. I don’t think that a guide is necessarily needed, but it was nice to have a driver and someone to explain things to us. However, it wouldn’t have been hard to take a taxi each way from your hotel.

  • Other activities include ziplines, gorge swing, hikes, elephant encounters, river rafting, helicopter rides, safaris, and local tours.

  • We rafted the Zambezi river and it was amazing! There were class 4 and 5 rapids. I wouldn’t recommend this for young kids.

    • Be aware that there is a very steep hike in and out from the river.

    • Our guide was fantastic and we had a great time!

    • Our tour included a grilled chicken lunch which was delicious.

    • I would recommend bringing some snacks because we were hungry during the trip.

  • Two of the people from our group wanted to do the gorge swing! I didn’t go, but I waited with some friends at the restaurant overlooking the gorge.

  • Not really a good thing… but be aware of mosquitos. This was the only city where we experienced mosquitoes. Bring insect propellant!

When to visit

  • We went in the “dry season” in September, but the falls were flowing like I’d expected!

  • The rainy season makes the falls so forceful that sometimes you can’t see the falls through the mist.

Devil’s Pool excursion

  • Devil’s pool is literally a pool of water at the top of huge waterfalls. Then there is a rocky ledge that you can sit against and look over the edge! It was insane and so beautiful. We got some amazing pictures!

  • You will have to cross the border into Zambia for this excursion.

  • Book this ahead of time! It books out!

  • This was a huge highlight!!!

  • We had a driver pick us up from our hotel in the morning and took us to the pools.

  • Wear your swimsuit, sandals, and a cover up. They have shoes that you can wear in the pools.

  • We went to the 6 am tour slot and we had the most gorgeous rainbow behind us! The guides said that there are usually rainbows at this time.

  • Our excursion included a delicious breakfast.
