How to get to Costa Rica
There are two main airports that you can fly into in Costa Rica: Liberia and San Jose. You’ll want to base your airport on where you will be traveling in the country.
You could even fly into one airport, travel around, and fly out of the other!
There are multiple airports in the U.S. that will fly directly to Costa Rica.
What time of year is best to visit Costa Rica?
For reference, May-November is considered rainy season. Because of the rain, this season is much greener and luscious.
However, more rain storms happen during the afternoon, with drier mornings and evenings.
Kim recommends going during this time because of how beautiful and green it is, but it would also be great during other times of the year.
How much time should I spend in Costa Rica?
At least a week. There is so much to do!
You want to have enough time to visit different parts of the country, as there are so many diverse places.
If you want to get out and see and do a lot, more time is better.
If you want to go to a resort and spend most of your time relaxing, you could do your trip in 3-4 nights.
Where should I stay?
Kim and her family stayed at a resort for a couple of nights, then found some hotels further from the beach as well. There are also “cottages” that are along the beach that would be great for families.
When Kim and her husband returned without the kids they stayed at Hyatt resorts around the country.
Air B&B is also a great option for larger groups that are very affordable.
Best things to do and see
La Paz Waterfall Garden is great for waterfall hikes and an animal sanctuary
Ziplining through the rainforest

Lots of options to enjoy hot springs! Some hot springs locations even offer resorts to stay at.

Getting around
Kim and her family rented a car both times that they went. Be aware that not all of the roads are paved and may be bumpy at times.
Rent a 4x4 car if you are able to!
Use the Waze navigation app to get around!
A lot of excursions will also offer hotel pick-up.
Food to expect
Gallo pinto is everywhere! This meal is basically rice, beans, and spices.
Costa Rican coffee is amazing!
There are lots of fruit stands all over the palace. You can get lots of fresh fruit for great prices.
Fresh juices
Tips from Kim
Don’t limit yourself! Try and branch out from staying at one resort and see more of what Costa Rica has to offer.
Spend time with the locals! They love kids and are so kind and welcoming.
