Is an Ocean Cruise or River Cruise Your Best Vacation Option

Do you like to cruise? Or maybe cruising is on your bucket list? You won’t want to miss this episode where Nick Mornard and I compare classic ocean cruises and river cruises!

Why go on a cruise?

  • You can visit many cities without managing your own transportation

  • You don’t have to pack up and move a bunch of times

  • All inclusive events, entertainment, and food

  • There are so many different things to do -- everyone in your group can do something they like

Ocean Cruises

  • There are SO many options when it comes to cruise lines, itineraries, and activities! Because of this, there is an option to fit everyone’s needs.

  • Since the ships are quite large, there is so much to do on board! Every ship is different, but here are examples of activities: rock wall, water slides, movie theater, mini golf, shuffleboard, basketball court, cooking classes, karaoke, trivia, spa treatments, and so much more!

  • One downside is that you have to get back on the cruise ship usually by 4 or 5 pm. Sometimes this leads to you feeling rushed or missing out on night life.

River Cruises

  • The most well-known river cruises are in Europe. However, they're everywhere! In the United States, you can cruise on the Mississippi. In Africa, the Nile is an awesome option and a great way to see Egypt.

  • On river cruises, you get to see lots of places EACH day! Since the ships are small and in the cities, your ship will move throughout the day and allow you to see so many different areas.

  • Christmas Market river cruises are the most popular! This is an awesome way to visit many cities throughout Europe and see a bunch of markets in a short span of time.

  • Since the ships are MUCH smaller than ocean cruise ships, you get to know other people on the ship! It’s a great way to make friends and get to know people from around the world.

  • The main river cruise companies are Viking, AmaWaterways, and Avalon.

  • River cruises usually include a variety of excursions for each stop.

  • River cruises are generally more expensive than regular cruising, but it includes a lot more! The food is much better and included on-land excursions are offered.

  • One downside is that since you do move a lot, there are a lot of deadlines to get back on the ship.

How to choose ocean vs. river cruise for your vacation

  • You need to ask yourself some questions. Do you like to be busy and adventurous everyday, or if you prefer relaxing? Do you like cities or beaches? Keep narrowing it down to figure out where to go!

  • Set a budget. This will help you know which cruise lines and itineraries are options for you.

  • Are you a big foodie? Do you love evening entertainment? Every cruise ship has their strengths and weaknesses!
