All the Fun Things to See, Do, and Explore in Huntsville, Alabama

This week we are joined by Tonya Prater to talk about the best things to do in Huntsville, Alabama!

Tonya is an author and blogger who shares lots of travel tips about family vacations through the Southeast United States. She and her husband live primarily in Ohio, but they also travel a lot in their RV.

U.S. Space and Rocket Center

Huntsville is known as the Rocket City, as it is home to the U.S. Space and Rocket Center. This is the #1 attraction in Huntsville! They have a space camp that you and your family can go through and learn how to be an astronaut! They do all sorts of space simulations that you can do as well.

Earlyworks

Earlyworks is a cool children’s museum that shows some of the miniature things that they have around Huntsville, a tiny constitution village. Tonya took her teens here and they loved it as well!

Huntsville Art Museum

This museum has an amazing exhibit for adults as well as super cool exhibits for young children. This is also a great place to shop for souvenirs.

Big Spring International Park

This is a great green space park where you can hang out with your family! They also have different events that go on at this park, so look into that before visiting Huntsville!

Harrison Brothers Hardware Store

This is the oldest operating hardware store in Alabama and it is really fun to look around! Right now it’s stocked with some of the items they would have had in the 1800s, but they also have lots of great souvenirs. Also ask them if they have any scavenger hunts going on!

Weeden House

Around the corner from the hardware store is the oldest house in Alabama that’s open to the public. This home was owned by an artist, Howard Weeden. She did a lot of paintings and drawings of African Americans, although she was legally blind. You are able to touch things and interact with the home during your visit!

Secret Art Tour

This art tour follows a trail that goes around a couple of blocks. This is a self-guided tour to see many murals around the city. There are also different art installations.

Monte Sano State Park

There are several hiking trails that Tonya and her family love to explore. They are all a little bit out of the city, but worth the venture. At Mante Sano you can camp at this location and spend time in the beautiful outdoors. They also have quaint stone cabins that you can rent. There are great hiking trails and overlooks at this location.

Lowe Mill Art and Entertainment

This is the nation’s largest privately owned art facility. It houses works from over 200 artists and has different studio setups. You can see some artists’ works, others just show the work, and some people offer art classes. There are also art and music shows here!

Orion Amphitheater

This open-air amphitheater is a great place to catch a show if there’s one while you’re in town! They also have different events going on here at different times.

Botanical Gardens

The gardens have a variety of beautiful exhibits of plants to enjoy! There is also a beautiful children’s garden and butterfly exhibit. They also have a Galaxy of Lights tour at Christmas and a Scarecrow Walk in the Fall. Check out the botanical gardens for special local events!

Rainbow Mountain

This is a nature preserve with lots of pretty rocks! There are pavilions and great playgrounds for kids. However, be aware that they do not have bathrooms here. Balance Rock is a cool attraction to see here! There are also some great walking and hiking trails here.

Green Mountain

Green Mountain is a cute historical area with a pond, covered bridge, and chapel in the woods. This is a great place to immerse yourself in nature.

Weather

Be aware that it gets pretty hot in Alabama in the summer. However, in the winter it’s perfect weather.
