Why Cape Town and South Africa are an Amazing Family Vacation Destination

Are you looking for a new family vacation destination? Look no further! Listen to learn from Jamie Edwards about why South Africa should be on your family’s radar!

Getting there

  • Fly into Cape Town as a main point of entry for seeing other areas.

  • Be aware that it is a long journey to get there.

Cape Town (Basic Info)

  • You can spend a week or more in this area and never run out of things to do and see!

  • Jamie recommends spending 4-5 nights here at minimum

  • Public transportation and Uber are great options for getting around. It can be tricky to navigate yourself.

  • There are lots of hotels and boutique hotels to choose from! There are also lots of “suburbs” all around the city that have great options to stay. You can also stay in waterfront hotels by the beach.

  • Cape Town is decently safe, but you do need to have small crimes on your radar. Pickpocketing occurs often. Be especially aware at night in the city.

Food

  • There are all kinds of food in Cape Town! They have a little bit of everything. There are a lot of Indian-influenced restaurants that Jamie’s family loves!

  • The Test Kitchen in Cape Town is famous and super delicious.

Cape Town Activities

  • Hike Table Mountain (be aware of inclement weather). You can also take a cable car up the mountain.

  • Bo-Kaap is a beautiful community with brightly colored houses. It is fun to explore and eat here.

  • The Biscuit Mill area has lots of boutiques and other artisans.

  • Volunteer in the Townships area to help a community in need

  • Cape Point is the very tip of Africa. This is a longer drive, but beautiful and fun to see!

  • Boulders Beach to see African penguins (near Cape Point)

Other South Africa Activity (not in Cape Town)

  • Visit Sabi Sands to go on a safari. You can stay here for multiple days and explore the area.

    • Jamie says that you will want to bring your kids on these safaris once they’re old enough to sit for a long time and be still. They also need to be able to keep their hands inside the jeep.
