10 Easy Travel Hacks to Save Money for Travel

  1. Flight deals. Consider signing up for an airline credit card when they are offering a nice sign-up bonus. Pay attention to what you need to spend to qualify for the bonuses. You can learn more about Flying for Almost Free in this podcast episode I did a couple of years ago.

  2. Hotel discounts. This is another place that using credit cards wisely can really pay off. Lorianne signed up for two different Hilton credit cards which gave her a combined bonus big enough to book 5 nights at the Waldorf Astoria in Orlando. (A $4300 value.) Check out hotel sites for offerings. If you decide to use a credit card, you need to pay it off every month. Otherwise, the bonuses will no longer be a value.

  3. Use Rakuten. This site is a portal to many other popular websites. When you start at the Rakuten site and then click through to other sites, you earn cashback through Rakuten. Sweet!

  4. Sign up for a bank account with a bonus. Often banks will offer bonuses if you open an account and have a minimum number of charges. Lorianne and her husband each signed up for a new account at MidFirst Bank and they each had $250 deposited into their account after 10 debit card transactions.

  5. Use Costco Cashback. If you use a Costco credit card, you can earn 2% cashback on your purchases each year. Basically, you get a check in the mail for 2% of what you spend at Costco. It’s money that you are already spending so why not get a little back in your pocket?

  6. Food Discounts. Use UberEats and you can accumulate credits for futures meals. This is a great way to try out new restaurants.

  7. Airport Parking. If you need to park at the airport, get on the email list of a couple of local airport parking places. Then you won’t miss out on any discounts or sales. When we parked at Sky Harbor Airport this March, we parked at Blue Sky Airport Parking and got a 40% discount because we pre-paid. We found out about this discount by being on their email list.

  8. Use the FetchRewards App. Scan your receipts into the app and earn points that can be redeemed for gift cards. It will take a while to earn points, but why not get a little reward if you are spending the money anyway?

  9. Buy Gift Cards. Check out your credit card offering to see if they offer a point multiplier when you buy groceries. If you do get a bonus, pick up gift cards for restaurants and activities you will be doing anyway while shopping at the grocery store. Just be organized and actually use the gift cards.

  10. Keep souvenir buying simple. Lorianne likes to collect rolled pennies while traveling. It’s a fun way to document adventures without breaking the bank.
