Top 10 Things to Consider When Traveling in a Group
Have a leader (or 2!) If no one takes charge, it will be difficult to take action. This does not mean that the leader dictates when the group will do. It’s more of someone who gets the ball rolling, shares ideas, and makes sure everyone gets to chime in.
It’s okay to disagree. You don’t have to agree to do all of the same things together on the trip. Consider breaking up into groups to do different activities. If you don’t agree on what to eat for a meal, take turns planning. If you really don’t like what the choice is, try to go along with it and then enjoy it when it’s your turn to choose.
Consider staying in a vacation rental. This is a great option with a group for a few reasons: generally saves on accommodation cost, you get to all hang out together in a common space, and it gives the group one central landing space.
Have one person pay and track it in an app list Splitwise.
Pack some patience. Expect that moving the group will be a lot like hearing cats at times. If there is a set time you need to be somewhere, plan extra time to get there and be clear with the group on timing expectations.
Plan ahead and book desired activities. If you are in a group, it may be a challenge to walk up to a fun experience and have enough open slots for the entire group. Book ahead to avoid disappointment.
Make restaurant reservations. With groups, it can be difficult to get a table at a restaurant. Plan ahead and make a reservation so you don’t waste a lot of time waiting to be seated.
Have a central place to organize things. We like to create a Google Sheet for trips and share it with the friends we are traveling with. We can track activities we want to do, places we want to eat, along with pricing and other details. You could also use the site wetravel.com. I recently came across this site and it looks like a great (free) way to organize a trip and share the details with others.
Ask for group discounts. It can’t hurt to ask!
Let people know the plans ahead of the trip so they can pack accordingly. If you are planning on hiking, let people know so that they do not only pack flip-flops!
