10 Safety Tips to Follow When Traveling With Your Family

Staying safe is always important when traveling as a family. This week Megan Grant joins us to discuss simple ways that you can keep your family safe on vacation.

Here are 6 things to think about BEFORE leaving on your trip:

1. Be aware of the current events where you are going

This includes any state of affairs, government unrest, or any events that might be happening near your destination. You can learn about this online via blogs, travel advisories, and social media.

Make sure that you get travel insurance ahead of time! In case something bad happens in the area you were planning to travel to, you’ll want to have travel insurance to be able to adjust the trip.

2. Be aware of local laws and customs

Every country is unique and has different expectations. Some countries may want you to cover up more than others. Some places expect you to act a certain way in some situations, and you’ll want to be aware of this.

3. Research your destination

It’s important to know what to expect where you are going. This includes weather, public transportation, and what food is available. This could also include learning about local scams or places to avoid. This will help you to feel more comfortable and confident on your trip.

4. Research accommodations

Look into the city you’re seeing and check out which neighborhoods are the safest to stay in. Also, check that the accommodation is well-reviewed (10+ reviews) and has decent ratings.

5. Look into best transportation options

Plan out how you’ll get from the airport to your accommodation. You’ll also need to figure out how you want to get around once you’re in the city. You might also want to have the transportation app downloaded and have your payments uploaded and ready to go.

6. Emergency contacts

Before you leave, have a photo or printed copy of emergency contacts that you might need.

Here are 5 things to think about while ON your trip:

1. Share what you’re comfortable sharing

You’re allowed to not answer questions or tell white lies if you don’t feel comfortable sharing these things.

2. Book local tours to get to know the area

This is a great way to gain confidence about the area that you’re in. They can help you know what to see, do, or eat!

3. Have an international SIM card or international phone plan

It’s super important to have access to your phone in case you need it. If you ever get lost or need to call a cab or book a tour, you’ll want to have access to your phone’s data.

4. Take a card with you from your hotel or hostel.

This is so that you can show someone the card (or a picture) and get back to the right hotel. This is an easy way to show your driver or a local where you’re trying to go.

5. Social media and location sharing

This is more applicable to solo travelers, but also to families. Do not live share your exact location where you are where you are. Especially with public social media pages. Wait a couple of hours before you share the exact location that you are.
